Ever wondered how diet and exercise together can really shape your health? A fascinating study from the NUTRiMDEA cohort looked into just that, analyzing data from 11,883 adults. Here’s what they found: the combined power of the Mediterranean diet and physical activity had a bigger impact on body mass index (BMI) than either one alone.
For starters, more exercise was linked to lower BMI (β: -0.5), no surprise there! But they also found that making modifications to how much Mediterranean food people ate also showed effects. For example, those with low Mediterranean diet adherence had higher BMI when their physical activity was low. But, when they ramped up their activity levels, their BMI matched those with healthier eating habits (β: -0.28).
In short, if you’re aiming for a healthy weight, don’t just focus on either diet or exercise—do both! Whether you’re young or over 40, you can benefit from the powerful duo of moving more and munching on that delicious Mediterranean fare.
