Another study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association compared two groups of overweight adults who followed the same diet and exercise routines for two years. One group used activity trackers, while the other manually logged their data. Surprisingly, the group logging their activity online actually lost statistically significant more weight than the activity tracker group. The researchers theorized that the activity trackers may have caused users to focus more on the technology than on the actual exercise behaviors.
To combat this issue, Fronczek recommends that users customize the settings on their devices and set their own exercise goals, rather than simply following what the tracker tells them to do. By taking ownership of their activities and successes, users can maintain their enthusiasm and prevent a drop-off in motivation.
