Did you know that pumping some iron during pregnancy can do wonders for both moms-to-be and their little ones? A new study from the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine and Western Kentucky University proves that resistance training is not only safe but super beneficial for pregnant women.
The researchers found that resistance training can alleviate common pregnancy symptoms like fatigue and back pain. It also helps manage gestational diabetes, making glucose control easier and reducing risks associated with high birth weight. Moms who engage in regular resistance training are also more likely to have smoother deliveries and even a higher chance of vaginal births—great news for both mom and baby!
What’s more, resistance training boosts uterine blood flow, which is fantastic for fetal health. It also decreases the odds of neonatal macrosomia (that’s when babies are born too large) and promotes better cognitive function and metabolic health in the child’s early years.
So if you’re expecting, grab those light weights or resistance bands—but skip exercises that require lying on your back or risk injury to the abdomen. With the right approach, you’ll be strong, healthy, and ready for the joys of motherhood!
