Failure to meet the 150-minute exercise recommendation can have serious consequences on our health, according to Dr. Lawrence Cunningham, a retired GP. This includes an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, as regular exercise helps maintain the efficiency of the heart and blood vessels. A sedentary lifestyle also leads to weight gain and obesity, which are precursors to health issues like Type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, individuals who don’t engage in regular physical activity may have weaker immune systems, making them more susceptible to infections and illnesses.

The impact of insufficient exercise can vary between men and women. For men, a lack of exercise can lead to decreased muscle mass, strength, and an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. In contrast, women who don’t exercise enough may experience exacerbated issues related to bone density, making them more prone to osteoporosis and fractures.

Moderate-intensity activities, such as brisk walking, dancing, and gardening, are accessible ways to achieve the recommended 150 minutes. These activities elevate heart rate and breathing while still allowing for conversation. On the other hand, vigorous-intensity activities, like running and swimming laps, significantly increase heart rate and make speaking in full sentences difficult.
