Are you pushing your limits at the gym? While exercise is essential for health, it’s possible to overdo it. According to Alena Luciani, a strength and conditioning specialist, excessive exercise can lead to overtraining syndrome. This occurs when you don’t allow your body enough time to recover after workouts. Symptoms include hitting a plateau in fitness, gaining weight due to stress hormones like cortisol, and experiencing prolonged muscle soreness.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity weekly. Yet, nearly 80% of adults fail to meet these guidelines! To achieve specific fitness goals, such as weight loss, you may need over 250 minutes of exercise per week.

If you notice signs of overtraining—like mood swings, poor sleep quality, or nagging injuries—it’s crucial to consult a healthcare provider. Scaling back workouts and focusing on recovery can help. Remember, while exercise is beneficial, balance is key for optimal health.
